Hard Maple End Grain Cutting Board (CB35)

This is an End grain cutting board made from Hard Maple (also known as Rock Maple or Sugar Maple). Maple is one of the most common woods that is used for cutting boards due to it's strength and durability. A few of the pieces have Ambrosia figure (as seen in the 2nd and 3rd picture).
The dimensions are 11.5" x 15.75" x 1.5". The board is finished with several coats of Danish Oil which is more durable and longer lasting than Mineral Oil or wax. All of my cutting boards are made with an FDA approved waterproof glue. Silicone feet are installed on the bottom of the board and are secured with stainless steels screws. Feet lift the board off the counter in case the counter is wet, and also make it easy to grab the board and lift it.
There are three common terms you might hear when someone is describing cutting boards, and it all has to do with how the wood grain is oriented. The three terms are: Face grain, Edge grain, and End grain. FACE grain is simply gluing several boards together. EDGE grain is turning the board on it's side and then gluing together. END grain is gluing the boards together, then crosscut them into strips. The strips are rotated 90 degrees so the wood fibers are facing up and then the strips are glued together again. With End grain your knife cuts in-between the wood fibers instead of across them. End grain does not dull your knives as quickly and doesn't show knife marks as readily as Face or Edge grain boards. An End grain cutting board is the choice of professionals.
Numerous studies have been done that show a wood cutting board is more sanitary than glass or plastic. Bacteria cannot live on a wooden surface like they can with glass or plastic due to the properties of wood.
